The Beginning Of All Change
Recently I was talking with a client about one of his family members who is in the throes of addiction. The circumstances were grim and the family was at a loss about what to do.
This client had been sober for a decade and a half and I asked what made him wake up and get sober. He talked about racking up a long list of bad experiences and close calls. Ultimately he said he came to understand he was powerless over his addiction.
That sounded right but I felt there was something more, something deeper, more granular and practical. We continued talking and then we landed on what felt to me to be at the core of the beginning of all change and that is to have an open heart.
Define open heart however you want but this one movement going from a closed, hard, guarded heart to an open heart I believe is the beginning of all change.
If you are stuck in a bad place try to open your heart to change, growth, healing just crack the door even a little and you will find help rushing in from so many places.
